d-day

Remembering D-Day June 6th, 1944

The members of the Sonoma County DSA would like to honor all the men who fought and died on June 6th, 1944, a day well-known as “D-Day” in US History.

On June 6, 1944, more than 160,000 Allied troops landed along a 50-mile stretch of heavily-fortified French coastline, to fight Nazi Germany on the beaches of Normandy, France. Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower called the operation a crusade in which, “we will accept nothing less than full victory.”

More than 5,000 ships and 13,000 aircraft supported the D-Day invasion, and by day’s end, the Allies gained a foot-hold in Continental Europe.

The cost in lives on D-Day was high. More than 9,000 Allied soldiers were killed or wounded, but their sacrifice allowed more than 100,000 soldiers to begin the slow, hard slog across Europe, to defeat Adolf Hitler’s crack troops.

Let us we never forget such an important day in US History. I encourage you all to to learn more about what happened that day by clicking the following link:

Adults, please take a moment to teach your kids how important this date remains so our future generations will always remember.

Thank you for reading and honoring these men with us!

Remembering our Soldiers on Memorial Day

This weekend, like all Memorial Day weekends, the Sonoma County Deputy Sheriff’s Association recognizes and remembers all the fallen men and women who have fought and died to protect our way of life here since the beginning of this great nation over 250 years ago. We urge everyone to do the same and to hold this day special for what it represents. Memorial Day is not to be confused with Veterans Day; It is a day of remembering the men and women who died while serving, while Veterans Day celebrates the service of all U.S. military veterans, living or dead.

FACTS: Memorial Day is a United States federal holiday that occurs every year on the final Monday of May. It’s a day of remembering the men and women who died while serving in the United States Armed Forces. Formerly known as Decoration Day, it originated after the American Civil War to commemorate the Union and Confederate soldiers who died in the Civil War. By the 20th century, Memorial Day had been extended to honor all Americans who have died while in the military service. It typically marks the start of the summer vacation season, while Labor Day marks its end. Many people visit cemeteries and memorials to honor those who have died in military service where 1000’s of volunteers place an American flag on each grave in honor of the dead.

FLAG PROCEDURE: On Memorial Day the flag of the United States is raised briskly to the top of the staff and then solemnly lowered to the half-staff position, where it remains only until noon. It is then raised to full-staff for the remainder of the day. The half-staff position remembers the more than one million men and women who gave their lives in service of their country. At noon their memory is raised by the living, who resolve not to let their sacrifice be in vain, but to rise up in their stead and continue the fight for liberty and justice for all. God Bless America and it’s soldiers…
